The Drone's test flight crew at Camarillo, California
(L>R) Mike Kreitzer, Mike Cummings, John Gorham, Robert Gorham
The Hind-D was a special project built by Mr. Gorham during the GMP era (starting ion 1986) under contract to the U.S. Army for use as a target drone. The Army used these large model helicopters to help develop defensive tactics against the heavily-armed full-size Soviet helicopters.
see “Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft,” 1986-87, pages 810-811
There were a total of 16 helicopters produced for the U.S. government.
The Hind was built at approximately 1/5th scale, weighed 125lbs, and could carry an approximately 50 lb payload cruising at over 45 mph. It featured a rotor diameter of 10.25 ft, and was powered by a 25 h.p. 350cc air cooled two-cylinder Westlake engine.
