Basic trainer introduced in the mid nineties and the original model was kitted out with a pilot and canopy plus a tricycle 'aeroplane' type wheeled undercarriage.  Whilst this did allow 'run on' type landings it was very prone, in the hands of learners, to tip over sideways.  As can be seen on the photo, the owner fitted a pair of rear undercarriage legs to get the best of both worlds.  Following on was an upgrade to a 'normal' skid type undercarriage which was much more popular.

Has the flight characteristics of a trainer which is ideal as an R22 is in reality quite a low performance full size helicopter.  Excellent on a nice calm evening though if pushed can get up to quite a turn of speed such that slowing it down especially at low height can be quite interesting. Though seemingly tall, a low mounted engine, wide undercarriage, benign control responses with bodywork and colours providing good orientation responses; it makes an excellent learner.
