Vintage RC Helicopters - Joe's Collection Schlüter Bolkow Bo105 helicopter

 Schlüter Bolkow B0105  Dieter Schlüter

Jan 09 - As you can see it looks very tidy however, I did not do the initial build and in fact this was another 'E-bay' find.  It has been stripped down to check that everything appears OK and in fact it had been very well built.  The only things I found were a few mechanical adjustments needed as I like to make sure that everything works as it should with 100% throw on servo's so that full mechanical movement is possible without binding.  As an engineer I do not go for using the 'computer' in the Tx to make up for a 'poor' mechanical installation.

It is fitted with a 'Champion' head on 'Heli-star' mechanics along with a 'proper' Schlüter exhaust so hopefully it will be reasonably quite.  The exhaust though protrudes from behind the LH side of the boom; I would have tried for a more 'scale' exit or at least through the bottom.  It has standard Futaba servo's, a 'period' mechanical rate gyro plus some working lights; they do not flash though I will probably fit a 'flasher' at a later date.

Remember, keep leads tidy so they don't get caught in the 'gubbins'.

Hope to get this one hovered and set up soon (weather dependent).............................

13 Jan 09 - Nice afternoon and very little wind so I flashed up the Bolkow however, it took nearly an hour to get it running and idling reliably.  This is the first Webra I have had with a 'Dynamix' carb and boy is it sensitive to adjustment.  I started off at three turns open....wrong; it just would not run.  Serious be-atch to start and would die when the plug lead was removed.  Turns out that it only needs between 1 and 11/2 turns max however, I eventually got it set up and running well then came the fun of the hovering adjustments.

(1)    (2)    (3)    (4)    (5)

(1) First came the ground runs to get the revs/pitch correct and at my preferred stick position plus setting the tracking, etc.  (2) Hovering checks to make sure everything is OK and to harmonise stick movements plus (3) a little 'posing' for the camera. (4 and 5) up into the high hover and small figure of eights to set up the climbing / descending pitch and because its a rate gyro to set up the 'Revo' mix.  As an aside Heli-Star mechanics do have the facility for a mechanical 'Revo' mix but inside a scale fuselage it would have been very, very difficult to make adjustments so I 'cheated' a little and made it Tx electronic.

One thing I did find that for a 61 it is not that responsive and 'bogs' down with pitch.  I was though running it quite rich to keep the engine from 'dying' and think that an extra cooling duct around the engine is required so that I can 'lean' it out a little more?  Also it is very, very heavy for its physical size compared to those with dedicated mechanics or later scale machines.

Mar 09 - Checked over and engine compression is not that good so mechanics stripped out and engine stripped to check; sure enough liner had a wear ridge indicating it was quite worn.  Replacement liner and ring fitted and all rebuilt ready for testing but due to many others in the pipeline and looking to move house it has been 'oiled' and put into deep preservation.

Jun 10 - Finally managed to assign some time to testing though still rich for running in purposes.  Windy day and really does struggle to hold side on though controls not yet fully adjusted / harmonised; sluggish in pitch as it is one heavy machine for its size.

Another E-bay purchase in Apr 09 and went very cheap as no one was interested in it however, it turned out to be one of Len Mounts old helicopters and actually ended up at Dave (Mr Hirobo) Niemen's house to pick it up.  Not sure on the condition of the mechanics etc, however the scale detail even on this fairly neglected model is better than anything I could ever do.
